Drinking that daily dose of coffee might be a lot better for you than you may have thought. There has always been debate as to whether daily coffee is good for you and may believe it is good for antioxidant activity and your brain. However, others suggest that it creates insomnia, increases your heart rate, blood pressure and can derail your indigestion.
However, studies have shown it is indeed good for you. That scientific evidence is good news for coffee drinks, and with that in mind, we have included five reasons why drinking coffee is good for your health.
1. Coffee provides healthy antioxidants
Studies have shown that those that drink coffee and an increased antioxidant activity versus those that drink cocoa and green tea. While green tea and cocoa are both considered the kings of antioxidants, scientists identified around 1,000 antioxidants in coffee beans that are unprocessed. They also identified hundreds of others over the course of the roasting process.
2. Caffeine boosts short-term memory
A recent study of 100 participants were given 100 milligrams (mg) of caffeine. It was found that, after monitoring their brain activity using magnetic resonance imagery while participants were carrying out memory based tasks, that their response times were improved. This was compared to those not given the dose of caffeine.
3. Coffee is believed to assist with declining cognitive abilities
Coffee has also shown to increase memory and brain activity if consumed regularly. It is believed that drinking coffee on a daily basis helps to prevent the decline of an individual’s cognitive capabilities and helps with various forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. One study in Finland found that those who were middle-aged that drank three to five cups a day that there was a decrease of 65% to the risk of getting dementia or Alzheimer later in life. That same study found that tea had zero impact on the risk.
4. Coffee is good for your heart
A Dutch study analysed the data from more than 37,000 people over thirteen years and found that those that drank coffee moderately (two to four cups a day) had a 20% reduced risk of heart disease when compared to those who did not drink coffee or were light to heavy coffee drinkers.
5. Coffee may reduce growth of some cancers
The Harvard School of Public Health released results from research that has shown that men who consume coffee may have a lower risk of getting aggressive prostate cancer. The research also showed women who consumed four or more cups a day have a reduced chance of developing endometrial cancer. Harvard researchers also noted that there were ties to lower rates for breast cancer, liver, rectal and colon cancers.
